Used to to, to get used to, to be used to
1. USED TO DO ( Solía hacer)
Used to do something expresses something that we often did in the past, but don't do anymore. It is often used in the positive form to speak about repeated actions - something that was a habit, or a way of life. Generally, we use the form to contrast past habits with present situations.
Example:
I used to live in a small house but now I live in a big one.
What time did you use to get up when you were at university?
What time did you use to get up when you were at university?
2. TO GET USED TO (Acostumbrarse a)
Use these forms to express that a person is in the process of making something "normal". They are often used with the present continuous form.
Example:
He's getting used to working at night.
Note:
When used with the present perfect, these two forms can imply that something that was difficult in the past has become normal.
Example:
They've got used to going out on Friday evening.
3. TO BE USED TO (Estar acostumbrado a)
This form indicates that a situation has become normal for a person.
Example:
Daniel is used to sleeping in a small bed.

Working on what you like
Well, I finished management at University, and then I was quite lucky because I got a job straight away as an administrator in a local shopping mall. It wasn't really what I wanted, but you know it was a first job. I stayed there for three years altogether. After two years I was promoted to Manager, and I stayed in that company for a year and a half, but after a while I really got bored, so I decided to resign and I searched for other jobs in the area. But I wasn't lucky finding a second job at all, and I was almost out of cash, so in the end I had to accept a job working as a dishwasher in a hotel. Well, it didn't work out very well because I'm a bit clumsy you see and I kept breaking things, so after a couple of weeks they fired me. And then, just by chance I met my old friend from university who was involved in television production. And she got me a job as a television researcher on a programme called "Prime Time". After a couple of months the network decided they wanted somebody younger for the programme, and I got the job - and the rest is history. I just love it!

A radio programme
Carol | And we have Angeline on the line, who's calling us from Sacramento. Angeline, are you there? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Angeline | Yes, I'm here. Hello. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Carol | Hello, Angeline, what's your concern? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Angeline | Well, you see the thing is, I have a wonderful relationship with my husband, we've been married about nine years now, but a couple of months ago he changed jobs. Now he works so hard that when he arrives home in the evening he's worn out, and all he wants to do is relax in front of the television and go to bed and sleep. Well, I also work, but what I want to do in the evenings is go out and have a good time and relax a bit, and lately he won't join me, he really won't, and - I just don't know what to do. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Carol | Christopher, have you got any suggestions about how we can help Angeline? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Christopher | Yes. Angeline, I would suggest you actually speak to him about how you feel - see if you can convince him to come out with you, let's say, for one or two nights a week, and then you could offer to stay at home watching television with him another couple of evenings ... compromise, that's the thing - work at it and reach an agreement. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
John | Well Angeline, if I can make a point here, what I would suggest is that perhaps you could arrange to go out with some friends on your own. You could go for a drink, shopping, to the cinema or just for a walk. If he wants to spend time at home, that's quite all right, but I don't think you ought to let him stop you from doing what you really want. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Carol | There you are, Angeline - I hope we've been of some help, and from all of us here we very much hope that you sort things out quickly. Now for a question from another listener, Jen, who's calling us from...

Desmond Hardcastle
Human Resources Director
Robinson's Electronics,
Enfield,

Application for Position of Management Trainee.
Dear Sir,
I am interested in applying for the Position of Management Trainee advertised in the latest issue of the Daily News. I'm 24 years old and I'm about to finish my course in Management Training at the Prince Court Polytechnic. I studied at St. Peter's Grammar School, Draiton where I obtained five passes at 0-level including English and Maths. I finished school in 1998 and worked for two years as an assistant clerk in the Sun Life Insurance Company in Draiton. Thereafter, I worked for two years as a junior library assistant in Brighton Central Library during which time I took evening classes in Brighton Technical College for A-levels in English, Physics and Economics, which I passed in 2002.
Although I have no technical experience in the electronics industry, I believe it is a field which is expanding rapidly and is the type of job opportunity I am looking for.
Yours faithfully,
Steven Newman
