There is a high risk of major volcanic eruption on the Pacific island of Makati. The inhabitants of Moran, the biggest town on the island, are going to be transferred to a safer place.
The decision was made by Sebastian Costner, Governor of the island, and came after a news update had been received from scientists at the Montserrat Volcano Observatory. They are fairly sure that there will soon be an important eruption and the safety of the residents cannot be guaranteed unless they are transferred immediately.
Yesterday, people were being advised to find a safe place in the north of the island. "Financial assistance for the islanders will be announced later this week," Mr Costner said. However, the islanders have criticised the government, saying that the government officials were aware of the risk over a fortnight ago but no measures were taken to prevent last minute chaos. They also claim that they are being transferred to locations that are still unsafe. "The situation has not improved. It's a total mess!" said a local activist.
